A Haiku to Action

July 8, 2008

Our once thriving Murray-Darling River Basin is on the verge of death. By most reports, the chances of recovery are slim. We are not unaccustomed to drought in Australia, and that familiarity, coupled with my plentiful city environment, has bred in me a certain level of indifference. Today, my indifference is replaced by the realisation that I have never seen the Murray-Darling. Chances are that my children and I will never see it in the glory that it once bathed. Yes… my despair is purely selfish. I can empathise with the people who rely on that Basin for their livelihood, but if I am honest with myself, I must admit that any action I might take to reverse the current state of affairs would primarily arise from my own grief.

I am powerless alone to save a dying river. Together, in selfish grief, maybe… just maybe, we can rescue it – despite the terrible forecast.
