Sonnet for Window With a View (for Liliane)

from a similar time of life
at a window over a high
way covered all around with snow,
he points out explainingly, “Y,

Y, Y, Y, Y”. Mum tells me I
pointed like I was asking,”Why?
Why? Why? Why? Why?” I kept it up
until Mum had reached her wit’s end,

and said “Oh! Yes! It ‘is’ a Y.”
And I kept – how Mum told me that -
telling it to my closest friends
until one of my closest friends

put it in a line. And I thought
like pointing at it again,
